Gigondas is the home of powerful to mighty, often fruit-rich, very dense and concentrated red wines that can be among the weightiest in the entire wine world. The best examples, however, are smoother, finer and more complex than their neighbours from Vacqueyras, without achieving the apparent lightness or the enormous aromatic complexity of some of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Christophe Grilhé

Nevertheless, they have long since shed their former reputation as "Châteauneuf for the poor". Today, the region's top producers make wines that are entirely their own, with a strong character, in two main styles. Some focus entirely on power and opulence thanks to highly ripe fruit, sometimes tending towards overripe, and not infrequently ageing in new small wooden barrels. The most powerful examples of this genre usually come from the hot plain to the west of the village.

To the east and south of Gigondas rise the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Their sometimes steep slopes, in the cooler microclimate two to three hundred metres above the plain, usually produce less lush wines with fresher fruit notes, minerality and complex spice. Weaker examples can be rustic to rustic, but if everything is right, a beguilingly juicy, spicy and profound red wine awaits, which even with not exactly rare alcohol levels around 15% does not seem ponderous or filling.

We have tasted almost 40 Gigondas at last count, of which we here almost all of them (only the samples that were not rated because of faults are missing). Links to all wines with detailed tasting notes as well as the producers can be found by clicking on the vintage headings.
