58 different grape varieties. 120,000 hectares. No. 1 in organic wine in France and 25 bottles sold per second worldwide. Almost 13,000 families dedicated to a common goal: The Pays d'Oc IGP wines not only stand for creativity and the charm of varietal wines - they also tell the story of courage and pioneering spirit.

It's no secret: the sun is a guarantor for a wonderful spectrum of aromas. Coupled with winds that keep the grapes healthy and guarantee fresh nuances, as well as a variety of soils, the result is an almost endless kaleidoscope for producing wines that are multi-faceted and full of character. A heritage left by the Greeks, followed by the Romans, 2,600 years ago, which the winegrowers in the area of today's Pays d'Oc IGP know how to exploit better than ever before.

The Pays d'Oc is part of the Languedoc-Rousillon - France's third sunniest region - with 200 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline from which the land stretches west like an amphitheatre to high altitudes, the winegrowers entered unfamiliar territory more than 30 years ago. In an area that traditionally stands for cuvées and the blending of a wide variety of grape varieties, they wanted to show that a multitude of grape varieties can also be convincingly bottled as single varietals in this Mediterranean climate.

What initially began as Vin de Pays d'Oc has been labelled with the protected designation Pays d'Oc IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée) since 2019 - and is one of the biggest success projects in France's wine history. Because what at the beginning only appealed to a small group of pioneers is now lived with creativity and conviction by 930 independent wineries and 150 cooperatives in the four departments of Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées Orientales.

After all, the innovative concept of wines from just one grape variety - each of which varies its character according to climate, orientation, topography and subsoil - gives them unprecedented freedom to act and create. Thus, after all these years, the winemakers and cellar masters can draw from a fabulous 58 grape varieties. In the vinification process, they can produce both dry and sweet wines. Sophisticated procedures, techniques and measures in the vineyard and in the cellar are the high art of the winegrower to produce his red, white and rosé wine from the grapes.

This makes Pays d'Oc IGP not only France's largest rosé producer, but also France's No. 1 in certified organic wine with a total of 90 million bottles. Native grape varieties such as Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Carignan have long been joined here by French classics such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, but also new varieties such as Marselan and Caladoc. Among the white grape varieties, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are frequently represented, but Gewürztraminer and even Riesling are also vinified as Pays d'Oc IGP.

A diversity that shows itself in red, white and also increasingly popular in rosé and makes a tasting an exciting journey, as the results of our tasting show.

Inexpensive wines can sometimes be surprisingly good, and rosé is particularly reliable in comparison.
