The difficult previous year made it clear that many producers in Wagram can cope very well even with unfavourable circumstances. How good 2015 is in comparison therefore becomes clear less when looking at the top in the area, but only when it becomes clear how broad the selection of really successful wines is this time. At any rate, you have to look for disappointments for quite some time. Especially in the case of Grüner Veltliner and the unrelated Roter Veltliner, the range of styles at a high level is astonishingly wide, from cool, lean and bone-dry to powerful and melting, there is something first-class for every taste.

In the following, we again briefly introduce all producers who have recently submitted wines. They are linked to their entries in the wine guide, where all tasting results are published in addition to the detailed producer portraits.

Franz Bayer Winery

Franz Bayer produces a rather wide range of wines of quite different types on his 24 hectares of vineyards. The qualities vary a little, but rarely disappoint. The best wines are sometimes even exceptionally good value for money, including red examples time and again.

Winery Leopold Blauensteiner

Small, very reliable winery with wines that are often accessible at a relatively early stage, but which can often also mature for quite a while. The 15 Veltliners have a rather warm, often a little sweetish character and cannot always completely hide their relatively high alcohol, especially at the top. If the peaks are too strong for you, however, you can easily stick to the lighter base wines, which are consistently successful. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also recommendable and priced consumer-friendly.

Bründy Wein Werk Wagram

Ing. Rudolf Bründlmayer primarily produces clean, straightforward wines that can generally be drunk young at affordable prices, including rosé and red wines. The reserves from the "GrandBRÜ" line can be noticeably more sophisticated, as the Grüner Veltliner is currently proving once again.

Ecker Winery - Eckhof

Quite an old vineyard, where Bernhard Ecker has been regularly producing good to excellent Grüner and Rote Veltliner for several years - from straightforward and drinkable to firm, powerful and complex. The other varieties are also consistently of at least reliable quality. A highly recommendable address.

Ernst Family Winery

Harald Ernst's Veltliners cover a wide range of styles. They can be elegant and animating as well as powerful and alcoholic - and basically everything in between. In 2015, the trend is clearly back towards power and melting, with very good balance at the top and good development potential for several years, but sometimes also slightly rustic and rather fat. Ernst is also one of those producers who regularly produce Riesling, Muskateller, Sauvignon or Pinot Blanc that are well above average.

Gerhold Winery

The Gerhold winery surprised us this year with a Veltliner series that we have not yet experienced here in this consistent quality. At the top, the powerful, juicy and mineral Fumberg is perhaps Gerhold's best wine so far. It can go on like this.

Winery Gudrun Grill

Reliable winery with consistently good Veltliners and Rieslings, where you are hardly ever disappointed, but are always pleasantly surprised when individual wines stand out even more from the good level.

Leth Winery

Top winery on the Wagram and one of the few producers in the area who can produce equally remarkable wines from all varieties. The most important varieties here are Grüner and Roter Veltliner, plus some of the best Rieslings, Sauvignons or Burgundies of the region, with the "Gigama" an exceptional Zweigelt as well as excellent noble sweet rarities. Even the basic wines here are often remarkably good.

Franz Anton Mayer Winery

A modern winery whose eye-catching labels immediately catch the eye. Consistently good wines, especially the Grüner Veltliner "Hochrain". The alcohol remains pleasantly moderate.

Sauerstingl Winery

The Grüner Veltliners labelled "Löss I" to "Löss IV" make it easy to make a selection, from light and drinkable to strong, warm and melting, whereby "III" and "IV" often differ more stylistically than qualitatively - they are both remarkably good. Also Roter Veltliner is always recommendable. The reserves from both varieties are also very good, but often quite woody and spicy and therefore only something for those who enjoy this style.

Winery Söllner

Toni Söllner produces distinctly characterful Red and Green Veltliners and Rieslings on his biodynamically farmed 15-hectare estate, which can be among the best in the area. Even the basic wines here often have a certain class - with very moderate alcohol levels.

Stift Winery Klosterneuburg

The Stift has vineyards in three growing areas: Vienna, Thermenregion and Klosterneuburg in the very east of the Wagram. Besides very good to first-class Grüner Veltliner, they also produce some of the best Pinot Blancs in the region.

Urbanihof Winery

An old traditional winery, now run by the 11th generation, which has slowly worked its way up to the top of the region in recent years. The Veltliners are ripe this year, very juicy, mineral and often a little sweet and melting. They should be able to mature well. The red wines also deserve attention here. The prices remain quite moderate in view of the qualities on offer.
