The Carnuntum wine-growing region extends southeast of Vienna to the Slovakian border. Until 1993 it was part of the former wine-growing region Donauland-Carnuntum, which was then divided into two independent areas. Its name goes back to a Roman military camp founded about 2000 years ago to protect the Pannonian Limes. The legionary camp first developed into a camp town, later into a civilian town, and archaeological finds from the Roman period still document the history of the area today. To the north of Carnuntum lies the Weinviertel, to the west the Thermenregion, and to the south the Burgenland areas of Neusiedlersee-Hügelland and Neusiedlersee adjoin.

The Carnuntum vineyard area covers 910 hectares and stretches south of the Danube across three hilly landscapes: the Leithagebirge, the Arbesthaler Hügelland and the Hainburger Berge. The vineyards are widely scattered throughout the region. The most important wine villages are Göttlesbrunn, Arbesthal, Höflein, Petronell, Prellenkirchen as well as Bruck an der Leitha, Hainburg and Stixneusiedl. In the Pannonian climate with hot summers and cold winters, the Danube and the nearby Lake Neusiedl provide a temperature balance that favours the good ripening of the grapes. The heavy, stony soils consist of loam, loess, sand and gravel.

Carnuntum produces predominantly red wines: About a quarter of the vineyard area is planted with Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch accounts for just under ten percent, plus Merlot, Blauburger, Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Laurent and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) as well as small amounts of Portugieser and Syrah. The trademark "Rubin Carnuntum" is borne by full-bodied Zweigelt red wines with a delicately fruity bouquet and velvety tannins, which are produced by the member wineries of the association of the same name for the promotion of the Carnuntum winegrowing region. The white grape varieties cultivated are mainly Grüner Veltliner (over one fifth of the vineyard area), Welschriesling, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay. "Primus Carnuntum" is the brand name for fresh Kabinett wines made purely from Grüner Veltliner.
