The Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) has adopted new classification rules for cognac. According to these rules, from April 1, 2018, filled Cognac of category XO must now be aged in casks for at least ten years instead of the previous six. XO is also available on the market under the names "Out of Age", "Extra", "Ancestral", "Ancestor", "Gold" and "Imperial".

A transitional arrangement applies to XO cognacs filled or packaged until 31 March 2018. Cognacs filled up to this date that are six to nine years old may still be sold as XO until 31 March 2019. All producers must report these stocks in detail to the BNIC. The BNIC had already decided to extend barrel storage to ten years in 2011 with an eight-year transitional period in order to show consideration for the producers.
