The wines from Würzburger Stein in Würzburg (Franconia) have been included in the European register of origin with the protected designation of origin (PDO) "Würzburger Stein-Berg" after a testing procedure lasting several years. The applicants for the new designation of Würzburger Stein and owners of the vineyards are the three major wineries of Würzburg: Juliusspital, Bürgerspital and the Staatlicher Hofkeller.

The Franconian wines from "Würzburger Stein-Berg" thus extend the register of specialities recognised by the EU, which are registered throughout Europe as "Protected Designation of Origin" or "Protected Geographical Indication" and are thus legally protected from imitation.

"This is not only a success for Bavaria as a speciality state, it is also further proof of Franconia's wine competence, which is recognised throughout Europe", the Bavarian Minister of Agriculture, Michaela Kaniber, announced in Munich
