Global wine consumption in 2020 fell by three percent to 234 million hectolitres due to the Corona restrictions on the restaurant industry. This is reported by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). According to the report, the market value of the total exports of wine-producing countries fell by seven percent to an estimated 29.6 billion euros. The increase in wine purchases in supermarkets and online shops helped to compensate somewhat for the lack of sales in cafés, bars and restaurants. The increase in global alcohol consumption in the same period is therefore likely to be due to beer and spirits.
