Domaines Kilger

The winery Domaines Kilger Wein GmbH with 55 hectares of vineyards in Gamlitz (Styria) applied for a restructuring procedure in self-administration at the Graz Regional Court on April 22. The company has been led by managing director Ivonne Uhlig-Möser since 2022. It belongs to the insolvent Domaines Kilger GmbH & Co KG, which already initiated bankruptcy proceedings in February 2026. Claims totaling 83.47 million euros have been filed against the parent company, of which around 51 million are currently recognized. The bankruptcy is one of the largest insolvencies in the Austrian wine industry. A court has already ordered the closure of the holding company. It was at the center of a complex network of investments by the German tax advisor and investor Hans Kilger, which includes wineries, hotels, restaurants, and agricultural producers. Several of these are already in bankruptcy.

Despite the insolvency, the operation of the winery in Gamlitz may continue. Even before the restructuring application, there had been "restructurings" to improve the organization and increase yield, according to a statement. A restructuring administrator is currently reviewing the plans and the chances of the restructuring plan.

The winery cites sharply increased costs as the main cause of the insolvency. According to reports, the cellar management, vineyard management, as well as energy, personnel, packaging, and transport were particularly affected. At the same time, high price pressure made it difficult to pass on costs to customers. Additionally, the insolvency of a central distribution company in 2025 burdened the operation. As a result, no new wines could be bottled, leading to significant lost revenues. The Buschenschank "Boho" also reported losses and has since been closed. An overall very high harvest volume in Styria was the reason for further sales problems.

In the background is the insolvency of the entire wine and gastronomy group of Hans Kilger. According to the insolvency administrator, the further development largely depends on the realization of the assets. The properties owned by the companies may play an important role here.
