The Umbrian wine entrepreneur Arnaldo Caprai from the eponymous winery has died at the age of 92. He is considered one of the defining figures of the wine region of Umbria. Born in Turin in 1933, Caprai turned to viticulture in the 1970s after a successful career in the textile industry and purchased 45 hectares of land in Montefalco. The goal was to develop the potential of the indigenous grape variety Sagrantino and make it known internationally. Caprai thus became an important ambassador for Sagrantino and, along with others, helped Montefalco gain worldwide recognition.
For his contributions to agriculture, Arnaldo Caprai was awarded the title "Cavaliere del Lavoro" in 2002. Stefania Proietti, President of the Umbria region, described him as "an tireless promoter of the region." With his death, Umbria loses an entrepreneur with extraordinary vision, who understood how to renew and further develop both industrial and viticultural traditions.
He was an optimist and generous person, leaving behind the message to always focus on entrepreneurship and development, said his son Marco Caprai, who has been running the winery for many years. Today, the business cultivates 160 hectares of vines and bottles around one million bottles.
