The Material and supply shortages for bottles, labels and closures for the wine industry are coming to a head. The winegrowers in Rhineland-Palatinate are also feeling the effects. Last autumn there were already signs of production and delivery difficulties worldwide, accompanied by massive price increases for glass, pallets and cardboard packaging. Now the war in Ukraine has exacerbated the situation.

"We will now be able to fill for another week and a half, then there will be a compulsory bottling break, until the end of April. Actually, we would have to fill continuously, because many things are sold out," Günter Schüller, cellar master at the Ahr Winzer eG told the television and radio station SWR. Especially wine bottles are hard to get and the next delivery of bottles is announced for the end of April, Schüller explains.

Winegrowers in the Rheingau are also currently reporting major problems with massive price increases and delivery problems with bottles and equipment.

Martin Freund, vice-president of the Palatinate Winegrowers' Association, sees the use of used glass as a solution to the shortage of materials. Many wineries already organise it this way. But at the moment there is less a lack of rinsing capacities than of collecting used bottles. The big suppliers have actively withdrawn from the bottle recycling system, and so there is a shortage of used wine bottles. The supply bottlenecks continue to push up prices, there are increases for packaging and shipping costs of up to 30 percent. The winegrowers have no room for negotiation. Consumers must therefore continue to brace themselves for rising wine prices.
