750 bottles of wine worth a total of 60,000 Euros were stolen during a nighttime burglary at an unnamed restaurant in Paris. Among them are several bottles of Grand Cru from Burgundy with a retail value of over 2,000 Euros each. The thieves broke into the small restaurant with only a dozen tables and gained access to the wine cellar. The police have launched an investigation.
In recent months, several Parisian restaurants have fallen victim to wine thefts. The most spectacular case involved the famous La Tour d’Argent, from whose cellar 83 bottles of Grands Crus worth 1.5 million Euros were stolen in January. The reason for this may be the sharply rising prices for Burgundies. According to the editor-in-chief of La Revue du vin de France, Jérôme Baudouin, the average price for a bottle of Burgundy Premier Cru on the domestic market has risen from 50 Euros to 400 Euros over the past ten years. This makes them attractive to thieves who target small restaurants and specifically steal 20 to 30 cases. Often, these thefts are commissioned work. In Germany, Spain, and Norway, the cellars of top restaurants have also been the target of burglaries and trick thefts in recent years.
