A vineyard has been planted out at Vienna International Airport Schwechat. With 144 vines, it is probably the smallest vineyard in Austria. The "AirportCity Rubin Carnuntum Vineyard" is managed by the regional association "Rubin Carnuntum Vineyards" under the leadership of winemaker Stefanie Böheim. On the one hand, the winemakers want to use the project to raise awareness of the fact that Vienna Airport is located in the Carnuntum wine-growing region, which is particularly visible during landing approaches from the east. The vineyard was planted directly in front of the event hall of the Airport City office centre and is intended to offer conference participants and the thousands of airport employees the opportunity to observe the development of the vineyard, to follow the work on the vines in the annual cycle and to get a feel for the wine-growing region in the east of the country.

On the other hand, the vineyard is a research project, as the president of Rubin Carnuntum Vineyards, Robert Payr, explains: "We have planted different Piwi varieties. This allows us to observe how resilient the plants are and to draw conclusions for our own new plantings as well.".
