German consumers are buying less wine in food retail. As the market research institute IRI has surveyed, wine sales in this sector have been declining again since April 2021. After sales had increased by ten percent in the pandemic year 2020, they fell again by five percent in the current year. However, sales are only one percent below those of the previous year. According to IRI, consumers are now buying higher-priced wines, above all sparkling wines. Their sales increased by six per cent in September alone compared to 2020.
