José Polo, co-owner and sommelier of the Michelin-starred restaurant and hotel Atrio in Cáceres, Spain, has given the British Decanter the first details of the "heist of the century" in his wine cellar. According to him, the thieves stole ten bottles of Château D'Yquem from the vintages 1806, 1883, 1884, 1891, 1899, 1900 and 1901. They also took a bottle of La Tâche 1990 as well as 24 bottles of Romanée Conti from the vintages 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1989, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2012. Among them were several magnum bottles. The damage amounts to more than one million euros.

José Polo reported that a woman about 40 years old, using a Swiss passport and wearing a wig, was accompanied by a man who committed the theft in the early hours of 27 October. Video footage from the hotel would prove this. "It was the man who robbed the bottles. It was a very clean, professional job. I think the couple was hired to do the robbery," José Polo said, making an appeal to the thieves: "I want to buy back the wine, especially the 1806 Château D'Yquem," Polo told Decanter. The thieves would find it difficult to resell the wines anyway because they were all numbered. However, he said it was conceivable that the wines had been stolen on commission and could disappear into a private collection.
