In 2023, the Moselle-Saar region achieved tourism revenue of over two billion euros. This is an increase of nearly 30 percent compared to 2016, as reported by the Moselland Tourism Association and the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Trier and Koblenz. The wine industry significantly contributes to the economic success of the region.
The interplay of wine tourism, hikes through picturesque vineyards, and cultural highlights such as the buildings from Roman history make the region attractive. Thomas Kalff, managing director of Moselland Tourism, emphasized that over 9.1 million overnight stays were registered last year, in addition to around 29 million day trips. Visiting wineries and wine tastings are among the highlights of many trips, attracting tourists from all over the world.
Christian Dübner, tourism consultant at IHK Koblenz, pointed out that tourism also generates important tax revenues for municipalities. In 2023 alone, about 185 million euros in value-added and income tax from tourism flowed into public coffers. "A euro invested in tourism is a well-invested euro," affirmed Albrecht Ehses, managing director of IHK Trier, referring to the strategic importance of such revenues for future political decisions.
