Wholesale selling prices rose by 15.2 per cent in October 2021 compared to October 2020. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the last time there was a higher increase compared to the same month of the previous year was in March 1974. At that time, wholesale prices had risen by 15.8 per cent due to the first oil crisis. In September 2021, the year-on-year increase was +13.2 per cent and in August 2021 +12.3 per cent.

Products and raw materials that play an important role in the wine industry have also been hit particularly hard. For example, the wholesale prices for fuels became 54.7 percent more expensive overall in this period, and the average price for diesel rose by 43.9 percent, according to Destatis. Iron and steel goods even became more expensive by a whopping 76.5 percent. The prices for sawn timber rose by 48.4 per cent, for agricultural commodities by 19.4 per cent. According to the current Destatis index, packaging cartons increased in price by an average of almost 11.5 percent between September 2020 and September 2021.

Prices for agricultural machinery, on the other hand, rose by only 4.2 percent, while crop protection products increased in price by about two percent between September 2020 and September 2021. Average wholesale prices for bottles, on the other hand, remained stable during this period.
