Wine imports to Germany fell by 4.6 percent in the first nine months of 2024 to 972 million liters. The winner of this development is Spain, which surpassed Italy (3.26 million hectoliters, minus 14 percent) with 3.34 million hectoliters and an increase of almost seven percent in volume. Imports from France, in third place with 1.28 million hectoliters, decreased by 1.7 percent. These figures were released by the Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE) organization.

Of the Spanish wines exported to Germany from January to September, 2.52 million hectoliters were bulk wine (+9.9%), 660,000 hectoliters were bottled wine (+5.2%), 80,000 hectoliters were sparkling wine (-38.6%), and around 50,000 hectoliters were in other packaging types like Bag-in-Box (-28%).

The value of wine imported by Germany from 64 countries in the first nine months of 2024 amounted to 1.172 billion euros. This is 9.3 percent less than in the same period of 2023 and the lowest value since 2017. Here, Italy ranks first despite a decline of nine percent with 686 million euros, followed by France with 493 million euros, which is 14 percent less than in the comparison period. Spain is in third place with 285 million euros. With an increase of 2.5 percent, it is the only country among the ten largest wine suppliers to Germany that was able to increase its sales compared to 2023.

The fact that German consumers are turning to cheaper wines and that Spanish sparkling wine has had a very difficult year is reflected in the value development of imports from Spain. Bottled wine achieved the highest sales with 129 million euros (-8.5%), bulk wine 122 million euros (+30%), sparkling wine like Cava only 23 million euros (-30%), and wines in other packaging 6 million euros (-26%).
