Between September 2019 and August 2020, German wine imports fell only slightly overall by 0.7 percent compared to the same period last year. This was calculated by the German Winegrowers' Association on the basis of figures from the Federal Statistical Office. According to these figures, Italy remains the largest wine importer after Germany with around 5.5 million hectolitres at a value of around 934 million euros, followed by France with 2.08 million hectolitres and 637 million euros and Spain with 3.31 million hectolitres at a value of 334 million euros. While Italian wines recorded a volume increase of 1.8 percent and a value increase of 1.6 percent, the volume from France fell by two percent, the value even by 7.2 percent.

Austria recorded a significant increase in volume of 13.4 per cent due to low prices: The value fell by 0.1 per cent in the same period. Wine from Chile in particular is therefore imported at particularly low prices: Volume growth rose by 4.2 percent, while the figure shrank by 9.4 percent compared with the same period last year. By far the highest growth in value and volume was achieved by New Zealand: imports to Germany rose by 33.9 per cent to 41 million euros, while the value grew by no less than 20.9 per cent to 149,000 hectolitres.
