The Federal Statistical Office has published the figures for wine imports to Germany for the year 2016. According to these figures, around 15.2 million hectolitres (hl) of wine were imported from abroad - a minus of 2.8 per cent compared to 2015. Nevertheless, sales rose slightly by 0.3 per cent to 2.567 billion euros.

The sparkling wines are interesting in this context: Their volume shrank by 4.4 percent, but their import value rose by 7.3 percent. According to the figures, this is mainly due to champagne: its volume rose by a hefty 14.6 percent, but its value by 13.3 percent. The other sparkling wines, on the other hand, were imported much less: their volume shrank by over ten percent, but their value still rose by 0.6 percent. Interestingly, white quality wines also increased: Their volume increased by 3.1 percent and their value by 2.7 percent. Red wine, on the other hand, was apparently less interesting: red quality wines lost 5.2 percent in volume compared to 2015 and five percent in value.

Among the suppliers within the EU, Spain lost the most: its wines were imported 7.5 per cent less, and its sales shrank by 4.4 per cent. Italy and France remained relatively stable, while Portugal is the 2016 winner, with its wines up 12.8 per cent in value and 14.5 per cent in volume.
