The 2016 wine harvest in Austria was different in the individual growing regions, as reported by Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM). While late frost in April as well as hailstorms in summer in Styria and Burgenland resulted in harvest losses of 50 to 80 percent, the yield in large parts of Lower Austria was above average according to the ÖWM.
According to the ÖWM, grape and cask wine prices had increased significantly, especially for Grüner Veltliner. The Ministry of Agriculture had increased the maximum yield per hectare by 20 percent nationwide in order to reasonably ensure the supply of the market. However, he was pleased with "the excellent quality of the wines, which are characterized by a particularly fine fruity aroma and fresh acidity".
