Wines from Rioja were sold in 2017 by four percent more than in 2016 in exports. The Consejo Regulador de Rioja reports that the proportion of white wine in particular has increased significantly, with a 16 percent rise in volume. White wine thus achieved a total volume share of eight percent.
According to the figures, 108 million litres were exported last year. The most important buyers for Rioja are therefore Russia, with an increase of 39.7 percent, China with 17.3 percent, Canada with 6.7 percent, the USA with 5.8 percent and Great Britain with 3.2 percent. This brings the export share of Rioja wines to 31 percent in volume and 40 percent in value for Spanish DO wines. According to the figures, their wines are 49 percent higher than the average price of Spanish DO wines and four times higher than the average price of export wines from Spain.
