The grape harvest has begun in Germany: In Lörzweiler in Rhine-Hesse, the first grapes of the year were harvested on August 13th for the Federweiss-making process, reports the German Wine Institute. The juice of the precocious Solaris grape variety ran from the grape press into the barrel at 75 degrees Oechsle. The start of the 2019 season is about a week later than last year's very hot weather.

On Friday, 16 August, the Federweissenlese in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse will also be officially opened in the Palatinate. Starting next week, further operations are to follow in the Palatinate, Rhinehesse and Saxony.

DWI experts do not expect the main grape harvest of early grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau to begin until around mid-September.
