Wine consumption in Germany in the past wine year remained almost unchanged compared to the same period of the previous year. This was reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of the wine consumption balance sheet prepared for the DWI by the German Winegrowers' Association. The balance sheet includes all wine purchases in the trade and from producers as well as wine consumption in the restaurant trade, thus reflecting the total German wine consumption.

According to the DWI, per capita wine consumption in 2016 was only 0.1 litres higher than in the previous year at 20.6 litres. However, according to the latest wine market analysis commissioned annually by the DWI from the market research institute GfK, the pure wine purchases of private households were around one percent lower last year than in 2015. The value of the wines purchased also fell slightly by 1.6 percent. "However, this was compensated for by out-of-home consumption", the Internet portal cash.ch quotes DWI spokesperson Ernst Büscher. "People are treating themselves to more wine in restaurants."

Most wines purchased in Germany were from domestic production: According to the DWI, German wine producers were able to maintain their market share of 45 percent of total wine sales in 2016 and increase their sales market share by one percentage point to 51 percent. With an unchanged share of 16 per cent, Italian wines rank second on the popularity scale among German consumers. This is followed by French wines with twelve percent - a decrease of one percentage point - and Spanish wines with a constant eight percent.
