The massive forest fires at the start of the harvest in California could lead to a complete loss of red wine production in places such as Sonoma, Napa Valley, Santa Cruz and Alameda. This is reported by several local media. About a dozen counties in California are currently affected by severe fires. Five wineries have already burned down. It is currently unclear whether they can be continued.

Several heat waves have caused the grapes to dry out into raisins in the growing areas. In addition, the red wine harvest in the affected regions is currently being massively affected by very heavy smoke development. It produces clearly perceptible off-flavours in the skins of the grapes which make it impossible to produce high-quality wine from them. Therefore, the only option left for many wineries is to produce rosé from it.
