Students of Geisenheim University have rebuilt a historical dry stone wall in the wine terrace location "Krähennest" near Rüdesheim. The project was implemented by the Rüdesheim Forestry Office, the Association for the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and Geisenheim University.
The "Krähennest" is located below the Niederwalddenkmal and serves as the university's teaching vineyard. The location is a significant testament to the traditional cultural landscape in the Middle Rhine Valley and includes 14 terraces covering nearly 2,800 square meters, including 1,266 square meters of biodiversity area. After an 80-year fallow period, the area was recultivated in 2005.
The goal of the project was to learn the technique of dry stone wall construction, preserve the cultural landscape, and contribute to nature conservation. Under the guidance of winemaker Helge Ehrmann and funded by a nature conservation budget from the Hessian Ministry of the Environment, the wall was constructed during a two-day seminar. The association regularly offers seminars on dry stone wall construction, thus promoting the transmission of this traditional craft technique.
