The Thorvald vineyard robot uses UV-C light to control powdery mildew at the Willamette Valley winery in Oregon. Its use for disinfection in the Corona pandemic prompted the winery to also investigate the possibilities for fungus control. With success, as Jim Bernau, founder and general manager of Willamette Valley Vineyards says: "We learned that it can be used to kill viruses and other things like powdery mildew - naturally, without the use of chemicals and organic sulphur. We see this as a remarkable opportunity for our industry to grow high quality grapes in a very natural, sustainable way." Developed in Norway by Sagarobotics, Thorvald performs the treatment at low speed and at night to bypass the mildew's natural UV resistance. As a result, he says, it is much more efficient and cost-effective than a human-controlled tractor. Sagarobotics specialises in robots for agricultural applications, and UV treatment is already being used to grow tomatoes and cucumbers.
