The Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) is satisfied with the 2016 vintage: According to a press release, the VDP wine estates were able to produce "very good grape qualities despite some challenges in the vegetation process". "The great late summer has turned the tide. The cold and wet spring and the first half of early summer really challenged us VDP winemakers. Now we are reconciled and have musts in the cellars that give rise to all hopes", explains VDP President Steffen Christmann.

The cool, rainy first half of the year caused an early and widespread occurrence of downy mildew, which put particular pressure on organic winegrowing for plant protection. "Fortunately, downy mildew has no influence on the quality of the wines, since it only affects the yield level in this phase and does not affect the quality of the remaining grapes," says the VDP.

In addition to disease infestation, frost and severe storms with hail and heavy rainfall have caused major damage in some wine-growing regions, so that "some winegrowers have to live with considerable yield losses in isolated cases," the VDP reports. From the end of July, however, dry, warm late summer weather set in and created the best ripening conditions for the grapes until well into autumn. Hot days and cool nights from September on favoured the development of aromas.
