The VDP winery von Hövel**** in Oberemmel on the Saar has ceased operations at the beginning of the year, according to a report by the Trier daily newspaper "Volksfreund". This is the second closure of a VDP winery on the Saar within a few months: In the summer, the Dr. Wagner winery in Saarburg had already shut down.
The report from "Volksfreund" cites anonymous sources. According to them, economic problems, rising costs, and declining sales forced owner Maximilian von Kunow to give up. The winery's employees had not received wages since the end of 2025. According to the report, "family disagreements" after the death of senior manager Eberhard von Kunow also exacerbated the situation. His son Maximilian (in the picture), who had been managing the winery founded in 1803 in the seventh generation since 2010, reportedly did not want to comment, according to "Volksfreund".
What will happen to the winery and the 22 hectares of vineyards – including a parcel in the world-renowned top location Scharzhofberg and the monopoly location Oberemmeler Hütte – is currently unknown.
Just a few days ago, it became known that the vineyards of the VDP winery Schloss Staufenberg in Baden will be leased by the Durbacher Winzer cooperative. The castle of the family of the Margraves of Baden is up for sale.
