The approximately 200 VDP wineries were able to increase their sales in the 2020 wine year despite the restrictions due to the Corona pandemic. This was reported by the association in its report on the 2020 wine year. According to the report, the wineries sold a total of about 37 million bottles in 2020, which is about five million or almost 13 per cent more than in 2019. Sales per winery also increased significantly from an average of 163,000 bottles to 187,000.

At the same time, 83 percent of VDP wines were sold domestically, 17 percent were exported. Sales to end consumers accounted for almost half of total sales in 2020 with a total of 48 percent. Despite the restrictions on tastings, events and tourism, the VDP wineries sold 36 per cent of them ex-farm. The share of wines sold via the estate's own web shop rose to twelve percent. This is a doubling compared to the previous year. 7.5 per cent of VDP wines were sold via online shops. At 24 per cent, sales to the specialised trade accounted for about a quarter. However, due to the closure of restaurants during the lockdown, the share of restaurant sales dropped from 18 to 12 percent. The share of food retail sales remained about the same at 8 per cent, and only 0.5 per cent were sold in discounters.

Despite the pandemic, the VDP wineries were able to push through quite substantial price increases. Wines from Erste Lagen cost an average of 19 euros, compared to 17 euros in the 2019 wine year. Große Gewächse wines were available for an average of 35 euros in 2020, compared to 33 euros the year before. The prices for estate wines at around ten euros and local wines at 13 euros, on the other hand, remained stable.
