As early as rarely before, the VDP wineries have completed their 2017 vintage. In the southern growing regions, the last grapes were harvested in many places as early as the end of September. In some regions, weather extremes such as late frost and hail also presented the winegrowers with major challenges. For the VDP, the "turbo harvest" ended "with pleasing qualities with partly very low yields".

"2017 was a year that once again challenged the knowledge we have acquired over many decades. First too dry and then in some places too wet, it was necessary to keep a cool head. But in the end there are excellent young wines with fine acidity and good structure in our cellars," said VDP President Steffen Christmann.

In the fillets of the best sites, he said, it is most important "to harvest the grapes at the ideal ripening time in a healthy, ripe stage and to avoid overripening". In the large and first sites, the early start of the harvest and the fast ripening of the grapes therefore required "courageous action".
