The VDP Rheingau is hosting the "VDP.Auktion.Reserve" on March 7 at the Eberbach Monastery. Unique large-format bottles and wines specially vinified for this occasion will be auctioned, such as the current reserve collection and gold capsule wines. Among the rarities from the treasury of Weingut Kloster Eberbach**** are a 1946 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Beerenauslese and the charity wine, a 100-year-old Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Pinot Noir from the 1926 vintage. The proceeds from this unique item will benefit a charitable organization that supports children and families when a parent is diagnosed with cancer.
The event will take place as a so-called "wet auction." This means: Many of the wines offered can be tasted during the auction. Additionally, it will be broadcast live on the internet so that registered guests can bid. All offered wines are listed online in the auction catalog in advance.
With this auction, the VDP Rheingau aims to continue a 220-year-old tradition: In 1806, the Duke of Nassau first auctioned wine in barrels at the Eberbach Monastery. From the mid-19th century, the Rheingau auctions became some of the most significant in the world. The organizers and winemakers of the auctions developed into the "Association of German Natural Wine Auctioneers" in 1910 – the predecessor association of today's VDP.
