The 196 wineries of the VDP sold around 32 million bottles in 2019 at a value of around 365 million euros. This was announced by the association in its annual report. This was an increase in sales of about five per cent compared to 2018, it said. Average prices were around ten euros for Gutswein, 15 euros for Ortswein, 17 euros for wines from Erste Lagen and around 33 euros for wines from Große Lagen. According to their own information, the wineries sold more than half of their wines as estate wines, about one third as local wines and 15 percent as site wines. The VDP estates were able to push through a strong price increase, especially for local wines: in 2018, a bottle still cost an average of 13.20 euros. The wineries were thus able to achieve an average growth of five percent.

Domestically, the VDP wineries achieved 73 percent of their turnover. In the previous year, it was still 75 per cent. "In the last few years, we could already observe tendencies that the number of wine lovers coming to the winery is declining, but the shipments to end consumers are continuously increasing. In Corona times, this trend is more pronounced," writes the VDP.

The export of the wineries also developed well in 2019. It was 27 per cent, which is two per cent more than in 2018. Overall, the export mood was "very good" last year: The association recorded strong growth in China as well as a boom in Japan and good increases in Russia and Switzerland. The most important export countries remain the Benelux countries and Scandinavia.
