The VDP wine estates achieved an average increase in turnover of four percent in 2018. However, only 53 percent recorded higher sales than in 2017, the association announced in its 2018 report on the situation of the Prädikat wine estates. According to the report, the VDP wine estates generated about three quarters of their turnover domestically, about a quarter of the wines are exported - with an upward trend. 80 percent of the members had reported an increase in exports last year, the turnover in the foreign business had increased by six percent on average. The most important growth markets are the USA, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

Domestically, the wineries generated about 35 per cent - and thus the largest part of their turnover - from sales ex winery. The VDP winegrowers see future prospects above all in online trade, especially in their own online shops. 57 percent of the wineries report increasing sales there. The wineries are also very positive about the trend in upscale food retailing to focus more on the premium segment in the wine sector.

The prices of the local wines and Grosses Gewächse were slightly cheaper in 2018 than in previous years, while the estate wines and Erste Lagen were slightly more expensive. Thus, Gutsweine ex farm cost an average of ten euros (previous year: 9.70 euros), Ortsweine 13 euros (previous year: 13.20 euros), Ersten Lagen 17.50 euros (17 euros) and Grosse Gewächse 32.50 euros (previous year: 34 euros).
