Valpolicella winemaker Franco Allegrini has died at the age of 62 after a short illness. Together with his sister Marilisa, the oenologist managed the Allegrini group with its headquarters in Fumane, north of Verona. In addition to the Allegrini winery, the company includes other wineries in the Veneto and Tuscany, which together cultivate around 240 hectares of vineyards.

In 1983, Franco Allegrini took over the oenological management of the winery in Valpolicella from his father Giovanni as a young man. Together with his brother Walter, he introduced important innovations in the vineyards. When Allegrini abandoned the pergola in 1979 to plant Guyot vines, he was considered a visionary. Here he was ahead of his time: the winemaker concentrated on the Corvina grape and planted the La Poja vineyard in Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, from which the cult wine of the same name comes. Franco Allegrini championed the Valpolicella appellation with great commitment and a spirit of innovation. Thus, he had the appassimento centre "Terre di Fumane" built, where optimal conditions for the preservation of the grapes destined for Amarone and Recioto were created.

His work will be continued by his sons Francesco, Giovanni and Matteo.
