The operating company of Uwe Schiefer 's winery **** in Welgersdorf in the Eisenberg wine-growing region is insolvent. Bankruptcy proceedings were opened for the company Schiefer & Domaines Kilger on Tuesday. The Schiefer winery with vineyards in the municipalities of Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg, Hannersdorf, Kohfidisch and Eberau is one of the most highly decorated wineries in Austria and helped shape the style of Blaufränkisch from Eisenberg.
Eight employees and around 110 creditors are affected by the opening of bankruptcy proceedings. The debts amount to around three million euros. In addition, there are probably still considerable subordinated claims, but these are unlikely to be honoured in the insolvency proceedings. In addition to the effects of the coronavirus crisis, the over-indebtedness is said to be due to damage caused by the floods in September (photo), a sharp rise in fixed costs and falling demand for red wine. There are apparently no plans to reorganise and continue operations. The company is therefore expected to be closed and wound up.
This is not the first bankruptcy involving the investor Hans Kilger. In 2022, he filed for insolvency for the company Steirerwein, in which he held a 50 per cent stake with his Domaines Kilger. The renowned winery and trading house Domäne Müller in western Styria also had to file for bankruptcy and was dissolved. Two other wineries on the Eisenberg only ceased operations in October.
