A 56-year-old British woman was arrested in the USA for stealing several bottles of Romanée-Conti. The tourist is said to have stolen wines worth over 34,000 euros from the wine cellar of the restaurant L’Auberge Provençale in the state of Virginia. She pretended to be an assistant to a wealthy wine expert from Canada to distract the sommelier while an accomplice took the bottles.

Surveillance cameras show that the alleged perpetrator wore a wig and distracted the staff with a fabricated story about a planned event for 25 people. While she was making small talk with the sommelier of the establishment, her companion took several bottles and replaced them with inexpensive bottles to conceal the theft.

When the fraud was discovered, the restaurant staff pursued the two perpetrators. Two of the bottles were later found, but the majority remains missing. The British woman was arrested, while her accomplice escaped and is still at large.

The wine cellar of L’Auberge Provençale contains around 5,500 bottles of wine worth several hundred thousand dollars. The couple had visited the cellar by appointment on November 19. The police believe that the theft was carefully planned. The British woman now faces up to 50 years in prison.
