According to a US study by the Cooper Clinic in Dallas (Texas), a higher level of fitness is significantly associated with above-average alcohol consumption, but a lower risk of addiction. Those who exercise regularly drink more alcohol on average, but are less likely to be "a problem drinker", according to the study. Data from 38,000 healthy patients aged 20 to 86 were analysed and published in the journal "Medicine & Science in Sports Exercise". They show that "women in the moderate and high fitness categories were more likely to have moderate or high alcohol consumption than participants with low fitness". Similarly, men with moderate to high fitness showed a higher likelihood of moderate to high alcohol consumption than the group of non-athletic study participants.

In addition, according to the study, all men who were classified as "heavy drinkers" had a higher fitness level than other participants. At the same time, however, this was associated with a "lower rate of suspected alcohol dependence". The fitness of the test persons was assessed with a treadmill test until exhaustion as well as the disclosure of their drinking habits. From this, the researchers concluded: A higher level of fitness with good oxygen supply to the muscles is directly related to less health damage from alcohol consumption in adults.

In a similar study at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana), it was recently found that people with a lower body fat percentage have a lower blood alcohol concentration than people with a higher percentage. This debunks the myth that being overweight makes for better alcohol tolerance.
