The European winegrowers' group "Francs de Pied", chaired by Loïc Pasquet from Bordeaux, is working on the recognition of rootless vines by Unesco. Last spring, the group was officially founded in Monte Carlo under the patronage of Prince Albert II. In addition to Loïc Pasquet, well-known winemakers such as Egon Müller (Mosel), Andrea Polidoro of Cupano (Montalcino) and Contrada Contro (Marche) belong to the association, as well as Gocha Chkhaidze of the Georgian winery Askaneli, Thibault Liger-Belair (Burgundy), Chartogne-Taillet (Champagne), Feudi di San Gregorio (Campania), Vida Peter (Hungary), Joh. Jos. Prüm (Germany); Dominio de Es (Spain); Artemis Karamolegos (Greece); St. Jodern Kellerei (Switzerland); Filipa Pato (Portugal) as well as other wineries.

"To gain Unesco recognition, we need to get a lot of influential people on board," Pasquet said, explaining why the group has asked prominent figures such as Prince Albert II of Monaco, Georgian President Salomé Zourabichvili and Italian entrepreneur Pasquale Forte for support. ungrafted Vines are a unique heritage as old as wine itself, he said, and it must be preserved.

Inclusion in the Unesco list would help wine lovers to become aware of the historical and cultural value of rootless vines. It would also prevent ungrafted vineyards - some of which may predate the phylloxera plague - from being grubbed up and would encourage winegrowers to plant new ones. A scientific committee is currently working with "Francs de Pied" to prepare the Unesco nomination. Pasquet expects the process to take at least a few years.

A certification is also planned to help consumers recognise wines made from grapes of ungrafted vines. "Our scientific committee will be responsible for certifying the bottles, similar to Demeter for biodynamic wines. There will be a logo that will be visible on the bottle label," said Andrea Polidoro. The presentation is planned for September 2022.
