Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene, the Italian Prosecco production area, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The characteristic hilly landscape with small vineyard plots and narrow, grassy terraces is particularly worthy of protection in combination with woods, pastures, towers and historic villages. "For centuries, the rugged terrain has been shaped by human hands", says the UNESCO declaration. Since the 16th century, viticulture has also produced a "unique aesthetic in the landscape".

The campaign for the status of World Heritage Site began in 2008 for Prosecco, and the Italian commission justified its application with a 1,300-page dossier on the region.
