The owner of the Beykush winery in embattled southern Ukraine, Eugene Shneyderis, has asked European winegrowers to take in refugees. Wineries that had free accommodation, for example for harvest workers, should use it for this purpose. He wants to contact wineries and regional wine associations in Europe to ask them for support for his initiative, Shneyderis told the British "Decanter".

He referred to the website icanhelp.host, which was set up a few days ago to connect refugees with potential accommodation providers.

49-year-old Shneyderis lives with his family in southern Spain. He was inspired by the helpfulness of a winery in his neighbourhood in Penedes. It is currently using accommodation normally reserved for the harvest team to house the family of a Ukrainian employee.

In the neighbouring state of Moldova, too, many wineries have already opened their doors to their Ukrainian neighbours. One of them is Vinăria Purcari in Chişinău, which belongs to the Purcari Wineries Group. The winery offers refugees food, blankets, clothing and places to sleep (see photo).

In the meantime, the German government has also activated the trilingual online service www.germany4ukraine.de in German, Ukrainian and English to provide help and accommodation. Airbnb has also launched a programme to help offer accommodation to refugees from Ukraine. There, too, wineries can report free accommodation.
