The German catering industry has been hit hard by the Corona pandemic. According to current figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), price-adjusted turnover between March and August 2020 was 40.5 per cent lower than in the same period last year. Catering businesses suffered the greatest loss during the lockdown in April. Compared to April 2019, sales were 68.5 per cent lower. In August, bars, inns, restaurants and caterers recorded a drop of only 22.8 per cent.
Gastronomes that generate their turnover mainly from serving wine, beer and beverages recorded particularly high losses. They suffered a 45.5 percent drop in turnover between March and August 2020 compared to the same period last year. However, the Federal Statistical Office did not record an increase in insolvencies in this sector.
