The traditional Rheingau wine estate Schloss Schönborn in Eltville with about 30 hectares of vineyards is giving up its business. According to a press release of the house, Paul Graf von Schönborn has decided to continue the work only at his winery in Wiesentheid (Franconia). The reasons for this are not given. It is only said that the family wants to "reduce the complexities and improve the economic development". The estate in Hattenheim is to remain in family ownership, the vineyards in 33 individual sites will be leased. Only a small amount of wine under the name "Schönborn" is to be produced by so far unnamed neighbouring estates.

In 2013, the winery was subject to extensive wine law investigations, during which it was deprived of more than 20 AP numbers. Since 2015, the family says it has invested a considerable sum in production.
