The Spanish wine group Familia Torres, based in Vilafranca del Penèdes, has developed an innovative system to capture and reuse CO2 produced during fermentation. The system has already been used during this year's grape harvest at their facility in Pacs del Penedès. It involves collecting the CO2 released during fermentation in inflatable balloons located above the tanks. The gas is then fed into a storage pressure tank by means of a compressor and stored there. When needed, it is reused as an oxidation-preventing protective gas, for example when moving and filling the wine tanks.

With this solution, Familia Torres is able to reuse an estimated 20 tonnes of emission-neutral carbon dioxide per year, which corresponds to one third of the gas required by the winery. According to Miguel A. Torres, president of the company, the technology will be made available to other wineries, significantly reducing the use of CO2 of fossil origin. By 2030, Familia Torres aims to reduce emissions by at least 60 per cent in cultivation and production.
