Tommaso Maggio, master winemaker of the Marsala producer Cantine Florio, has been named "Master Winemaker of the Year" at Wine Paris. The award is given by the British trade magazine The Drinks Business and is regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in the global wine industry. Maggio, who has been with Florio for 28 years, received the award for a series of top ratings, particularly for the Florio Marsala Dolce Superiore Riserva 1994.
This is the first time this title has been awarded to a winemaker for fortified wines. In his acceptance speech, Maggio highlighted the long history, strong identity, and personality of Marsala. "With its various types and serving temperatures, it can be paired with many dishes, making it a very versatile wine." Patrick Schmitt MW, editor-in-chief of The Drinks Business, said in his tribute: "Marsala is capable of greatness. Keep that in mind the next time you take a sip for a tiramisu."
