An auction of Tignanello wines far exceeded expectations. At the auction organized by Christie's to commemorate the first release of Tignanello by the Antinori family 50 years ago, nearly all vintages of the first Super Tuscan from the winery's reserve were offered. Among them, two bottles of the first vintage 1971 were auctioned. One fetched 977 euros, the other 900 euros. The estimated values ranged from 360 to 600 euros. Individual bottles from the 1978 and 1979 vintages also sold for 977 euros, significantly above the estimate of a maximum of 360 euros. Other highlights of the auction included nine magnums from the vintages 2000 – 2009 excluding the 2002, in which no Tignanello was produced. They nearly doubled their estimated value of 3,360 euros with a final price of 6,300 euros.
A barrique of Tignanello 2024, which will be released in 2027, changed hands for 56,500 euros. A lot with the current vintage 2021, including a twelve-liter bottle and an overnight trip to the winery by private jet, was sold for 25,500 euros.
Marchese Piero Antinori expressed satisfaction with the auction results and described Tignanello as "the wine that is probably closest to my heart. The Tignanello 1971 was a milestone in Tuscan winemaking that contributed to the renaissance of Italian wines."
