In 2021, exports of Moselle wine increased by 27.5 percent compared to the previous year. In value, the wines even recorded an increase of 36.6 per cent. According to the export statistics of the Association of German Wine Exporters (VDW), 214,000 hectolitres of Mosel wine with a total value of 90 million euros went abroad in 2021. This corresponds to around 28 million 0.75 litre bottles. The average price rose by almost 30 cents per litre to 4.22 euros ex cellar. The suspension of the punitive tariffs introduced by Trump caused exports to the USA to rise by 26.9 per cent in value and 21.5 per cent in volume in 2021. The USA remains the most important export market for Mosel wines with 43.1 per cent, followed by China, which took 12,000 hectolitres (+62.9%). Third and fourth place go to Canada and Norway, where slight volume decreases were registered in each case. Positive sales also in Great Britain: While in the past the British mainly bought low-priced entry-level wines, they are now learning to appreciate higher-quality Steillagen Rieslings more and more.
"After a few difficult years in which exports of Mosel wines declined due to low harvests and political problems, our export businesses in 2021 have reached the level of 2014 again," Ansgar Schmitz, managing director of Mosel-Weinwerbung, commented on the figures. The winegrowers were currently concerned about the war in Ukraine as well as the cost increases for energy, fuel, bottles, cardboard packaging and containers. Although neither Ukraine nor Russia are among the most important export markets, both countries had recorded high growth rates in recent years.
