The small 2021 harvest in New Zealand due to spring frost and cold spring is being met with high demand, especially in the strongest export markets of the UK, USA and Australia. With demand already very high and stocks extremely low, Philip Gregan, CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers, expects "many wineries will face difficult decisions on who to supply next year in their key markets." He estimates the quality of the harvest to be very high for this.

The small vintage in terms of volume further exacerbates the problems of the New Zealand wine industry: production costs are rising due to persistent labour shortages caused by closed borders and the limited number of seasonal workers.
