The stocks of German wines decreased significantly in the past wine year. As the German Wine Institute (DWI) announced on the basis of a publication by the Federal Statistical Office on the wine stock situation in Germany on the cut-off date of 31 July 2020, the volume of German wines and sparkling wines in stock fell by 0.7 million hl to 8.4 million hl compared with the same period of the previous year. This corresponds to a decline of 7.4 percent.

As of the previous year's reporting date, wine stocks had still reached a comparatively high level of 9.1 million hectolitres after the large harvest of more than 10 million hl in the 2018 vintage. According to DWI Managing Director Monika Reule, the declining figures are an indication of the good sales of German wines. The DWI had already reported it in August on the basis of the Nielsen household panel for the first half of 2020.
