In the past days and nights, the vineyards in several French growing regions have been damaged by severe frost and hailstorms. Due to the mild spring and the resulting early budding of the vines, the damage is sometimes very severe. The Languedoc region was particularly affected. Here, several night and morning frosts occurred and hail with grains up to ten centimetres in size fell. Three tornadoes were also confirmed by meteorologists in the growing region. Severe damage occurred on approximately 500 hectares in the Gard growing region. Among the affected estates is the "Heracles" cooperative, one of the largest organic wine producers in France.

To the west of Nantes, the soil in the entire cultivated area also cooled far below zero degrees. Here, about 80 percent of the vineyards are said to have been damaged. On the Loire, frost reached temperatures of minus six degrees Celsius, and the very intense morning sun added further burns to the young shoots.

In Burgundy and Beaujolais, temperatures also dropped to minus four degrees. The authorities in Savigny, Chassagne, Meursault, Auxey-Duresses, Puligny and Saint-Aubin gave permission to raise the ambient temperature of the vines with straw fires.
