Willi Klinger, Managing Director of "Österreich Wein Marketing" has presented the book "Wine in Austria: The History" in Wien. It will be published in September by Brandstätter Verlag. According to Klinger, this is "the first scientifically sound, comprehensive volume on the history of viticulture in Austria from prehistoric times to the present day".

According to Klinger, more than two and a half years of work went into the 700-page book, which was written on his initiative and under the scientific direction of Professor Karl Vocelka (emeritus) and the editorial staff of Michaela Vocelka. "In this volume, more than 40 authors shed light on the long history of Austrian wine in all its facets: grape varieties, cultural and cellar techniques, the role of wine in religion and customs, the origins of the Austrian wine-growing regions as well as the development after 1985. "For the first time, this volume provides a well-founded view of the historical-cultural significance of wine in Austria," says Klinger happily.

The authors also dealt in detail with critical topics of the domestic history of viticulture. In a separate chapter, the German journalist Dr. Daniel Deckers, for example, sheds light on the much-discussed career of the botanist and vine grower Friedrich Zweigelts, who joined the NSDAP as early as 1933 and later became a convinced National Socialist. In the course of his extensive research in archives, Deckers came across previously unseen material.

A further chapter of the book is devoted to the influence of the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1918 and the new demarcations in the 1919 Paris suburban treaties on viticulture. The complex topic was developed by co-editors Prof. Karl Vocelka and Michaela Vocelka. The book was presented by Willi Klinger at the start of a conference on Austrian wine history.
